Hispanic Heritage Month

Last week was the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. Observed in the United States from September 15 and runs through October 15.

September 15 is significant to my heritage; El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their Independence Day.

I’d like to share a glimpse that not all Latinos or Hispanics can embrace their heritage, not because we are not proud but because of certain life events that our loved ones lived that make it difficult to talk about the beauty and culture that was once home.

Growing up in LA, I knew little about my culture. My mother is Salvadorean and came to the U.S. as an Adolescent. My grandmother and mother fled during the war.

Here’s something else: as I write this, there is more I want to share that is in my heart. I want to add this for those who may not be familiar with Hispanic Heritage Month or are conscious of multicultural topics outside of a textbook.

I use Latino, Latina, Latine, and Hispanic as last when discussing my heritage.

I have preferred to use something other than Hispanic, probably as long as I can remember. I was thirteen or fourteen when I read an article that said the U.S. Federal government created Hispanic as a term for individuals of Latin American or Spanish heritage.

Hispanic is an ethnic label that does not fairly represent who we are. All ethnicities are beautiful and distinct, and this term does not serve. More importantly, Hispanic is not a race of people. We are more than a term or a check the box. Let’s move away from these terms that others create and focus on the details that make us all unique.

I am passionate about many things, and representation is one of them. I will continue to share snippets about this topic, and I hope it can provide awareness of Latino and Hispanic Heritage.

Taking Space

I love reading other people’s blogs and vlogs on their social platforms. I am also guilty of scrolling on Pinterest or watching YouTube during downtime. I strongly desire to create my blog and share everything I am passionate about and enjoy.

I immediately noticed that all the blogs and posts had the same topics or approaches, and sometimes, the same people came up with the same niches.

If I am being transparent, none of the individuals looked like me. There was not one where I felt connected, and it was disappointing that there needed to be more Latina representation.

This year, I kept going back to all the platforms and finally decided that I was going to do it!

I decided to start my blog. This little space will raise awareness and encourage the creation of a network of support and empowerment.

Most Importantly, I want to represent the millions of girls and women worldwide ( curves, brown eyes, black hair, creative and assertive.) To be proud AF as a Latina, and to not be afraid to unlock your power.

A First-Gen Latina’s Ascent:

As a first-generation Latina, I carry the stories and dreams of my family on my shoulders. Pursuing higher education was not just about personal growth—it was about shattering the limitations placed on me and future generations. With unyielding determination, I navigated the complex world of academia, breaking down barriers that once seemed impossible.

My education isn’t just a personal achievement; it’s a beacon of hope for those who come after me, a testament that dreams are possible.

Navigating my Roles as a Woman, Wife, and Mom

The roles we play in life are as diverse as the colors in a sunset. As a woman, mom, and wife, I understand the intricate balance required to excel in each sphere while nurturing the essence of self.

Together, we will delve into the art of managing these roles with grace, embracing the challenges and triumphs that come our way, and finding fulfillment during our bustling lives.

Unlocking the Power Within

Dreams are the compasses that guide us toward our true destination. Through my words, I seek to ignite the flame of ambition within you and remind you that the canvas of your aspirations knows no bounds.

It’s not just about dreaming; it’s about having the audacity to dream big, reach for the stars, and never let fear eclipse your desires’ brilliance.

Amplifying our Voices

This blog is my open journal—a canvas to share my triumphs, struggles, revelations, and lessons. I hope that through my words and experiences, you find the motivation to embark on your journey of empowerment.

May my stories serve as stepping stones on your path toward living out your dreams, breaking barriers, and embracing the beauty of your authentic self.

As a Latina woman, I recognize the importance of taking up space- both physically and metaphorically- in a world that may not always make room for us.

I invite you to join me in embracing our heritage, celebrating our uniqueness, and contributing to a broader narrative that empowers women of color to shine brightly and unapologetically.

With Love and Empowerment,

 Tanya
